Misuse of Electronic Devices

Information on the misuse of electronic devices can be found on page 7 of the Thomas Russell Middle School 2019 - 2020 Student Handbook.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Recent research has shown excessive cell phone and social media usage can cause an increase in anxiety and depression amongst middle school aged children. Any electronic device (cell phone, Nintendo Switch, Airpods, or smartwatch, etc.) used without explicit permission of TRMS staff may be deemed to have created disruption to the instructional environment and will be confiscated; disciplinary actions may also take place.

Consequences

1st Offense – The device is confiscated and taken to the administration before the end of the school day. The student can get the device from administration at the end of the day.

2nd Offense – The device is confiscated and taken to the administration before the end of the school day. The student must have their parent/guardian call and make an appointment with the administration to get the device returned, as well as sign an electronic device behavior contract.

3rd Offense - The device is confiscated and turned in to the administration before the end of the school day. The device will remain safely secured with administration until the last day of school for that year.
